10 Top tips to find and employ a Live in Care Worker/ Personal Assistant.

Finding a reliable and suitable Live in Care worker or Personal Assistant is very challenging. At PA Care we’ve put together some top tips which can help.

1. You can employ a family member or a friend as your personal assistant. This is allowed as long as that person does not currently live with you.

 2. If you need to advertise you need to think about where you will advertise to find a good match. On line sites can be expensive but will provide you with a wide choice. Local job centers and papers are another good method.

 3. Have a clear job description which lists all of the tasks that you would like your PA to carry out. (PA Care can supply you with this free of charge call us on 01727 891004)

 4. Write a person specification – that is a list of all the qualifications, experience, personal qualities like good sense of humour. You might like to think about what you consider essential and what would be advantageous.( PA Care can supply you with this free of charge call us on 01727 891004)

5. An initial telephone interview can help you to decide if you want to interview them in person. Keep it brief maybe 5 quick questions.

6. You should carry out a criminal records check for all PA’s you would like to employ. The local Council or live in agency can help you with this.

7. Register with the Inland Revenue as an employer so you can pay the PA’s tax and NI.

8. Have a clear contract of employment so that both you and your PA know what is expected of them.

9.Make sure you offer your PA training – Safeguarding, First Aid and manual handling are some of the subjects which are really important.

10.  Organise regular Supervision or 121  meetings with your PA so that you both have the opportunity to discuss any concerns.
